The Department for Veterinary Public Health, Nutrition and Food Safety carries out the activities and interventions aimed at ensuring food safety and veterinary health in order to safeguard human health and animal health and welfare. Its tasks involve research and experimentation, the financing and control of the experimental zooprophylactic institutes and international relations concerning its area of responsibility, also with international and European Union organizations such as OIE, FAO, WHO and EU. It deals with risk assessment regarding food safety as well as the coordination of veterinary offices for the fulfillment of European Union obligations (UVAC) and the Border veterinary checkpoints (PIF); its competences also cover nutrition, herbal dietetic products and food integrators, veterinary drugs, phytosanitary products, animal nutrition and the monitoring of veterinary and food preventive systems.
