Steering Group 2022

The GHSA - Global Health Security Agenda is coordinated and directed by a Steering Committee (Steering Group) composed of approximately 15 countries, international organizations and non-governmental stakeholders. The primary role of the Steering Group is to provide strategic guidance by setting GHSA priorities, monitor the implementation of the goals, and facilitate coordination and communication among GHSA members.

Italy is a permanent member of the Steering Group, moreover in November 2021 our country assumed the Presidency for 2022. Among the many activities of the Italian Presidency is also the organization of the annual meetings of the Steering Group.


First meeting of the 2022 Steering Group

The first meeting of the Steering Group under the Italian Presidency was held on 8 March 2022 at the Ministry of Health in the Auditorium Cosimo Piccinno in Lungotevere Ripa, Rome.

Giovanni Rezza, Director General of Preventive Health opened the work of the Steering Group in which the GHSA member countries along with WHO, FAO and OIE participated remotely.

During the meeting, chaired by Francesco Maraglino, Director of Office 5 - Communicable Disease Prevention and International Prophylaxis of the Directorate General for Health Prevention and managed by Sandro Bonfigli of the same office, the Task Force for the coordination of working groups and that for the verification of the achievement of objectives updated the members of the Steering Group on current and future GHSA activities and discussed the future of the GHSA after 2024.

Two new Members who have joined the GHSA were introduced: El Salvador and Africa CDC

Second meeting of the Steering Group 2022

The second meeting of the Steering Group under the Italian Presidency took place on 21 June 2022 at the Ministry of Health, in the Biagio d'Alba Auditorium in Viale Ribotta in Rome.

Pierdavide Lecchini, Director General of the Directorate General for Animal Health and Veterinary Medicine opened the Steering Committee proceedings by welcoming the participants. In his speech, he highlighted the contribution and strategies undertaken by the GHSA against global health threats caused by infectious diseases.

The meeting, chaired by Francesco Maraglino, Director of Office 5 - Communicable Disease Prevention and International Prophylaxis of the Directorate General for Health Prevention and managed by Sandro Bonfigli of the same office, was attended remotely by GHSA member countries together with task force members and persons in charge of the Action Packages.

During the proceedings, the progress of the GHSA from January 2021 to the present was discussed. The main topics addressed, proposed by the Italian Presidency, concerned a discussion among Steering Group members on the changes and improvements to be adopted to ensure the future of the GHSA itself after 2024; the future of the Task Force on Research and Development; an update on the activities of the Action Packages.

Also during the meeting there were important updates on the upcoming GHSA Ministerial Meeting that will take place in Seoul, Korea from 28 to 30 November 2022. Director Jeong Yujin, Division of International Affairs, KDCA outlined both the activities to prepare the organisational aspects, as well as key topics such as: the work to prepare a Ministerial Declaration and the Republic of Korea's commitment to establish a GHS Coordinating Office in Seoul.

The final decision on the Task Force on Research and Development was to extend its activities. The Action Packages that took part were:

  • Laboratory Systems
  • Legal Preparedness
  • Biosafety and Biosecurity
  • Sustainable Financing

The next Steering Group is scheduled for October 2022
