Covid-19 weekly monitoring, report 17 - 23 May 2021

The incidence rate throughout the country continues to fall and has reached values that, through intensive and systematic tracing, could allow the pandemic to be managed by means of containment i.e. identifying cases and tracing their contacts.

The pressure on hospital services is below the critical threshold in all regions/autonomous provinces and the estimated average Rt transmissibility indicator calculated on symptomatic cases remains stable and below the epidemic threshold.

The prevalent circulation in Italy of the variant B.1.1.7 (known as the UK variant) and the presence of other variants that can partially evade immune responses, means that, in any case, the situation must continue to be monitored carefully and the epidemic must be managed with caution and in a progressive manner.
