FAQ - Continuity of care and medical prescriptions

(Mostra risposte)

You can continue treatment upon your return since the medical prescription issued in the country of treatment will be recognised in your country.

A medical prescription issued in another Member State will normally also be recognised in Italy and the medicinal product will be dispensed if it is authorised for sale in Italy. However, if there are well-founded concerns for the protection of human health, legitimate and justified doubts about the authenticity, content or comprehensibility of the medical prescription or for ethical reasons the pharmacist may refuse to dispense the medication.

Medical prescriptions issued in Italy must also be recognised in the other Member States. To facilitate recognition of the prescription issued to you, check that it contains at least the data required by Directive 2012/52/EU, which lays down measures to facilitate the recognition of medical prescriptions issued in another Member State. You should contact the Italian National Contact Point for information on the details to be included in the prescriptions.

The costs that you incurred to purchase a medicine or medical device in an EU country will normally be reimbursed by your competent institution (if you are registered with the Italian National Health Service, by your Local Health Authority (ASL)).

To find out which medications or medical devices are reimbursable and in what amount, you can contact your competent institution (if you are registered with the Italian National Health Service, the ASL to which you belong).
