Useful information regarding health assistance for the population arriving from Ukraine: access to treatment, Covid-19, vaccinations, green certification, pets.
In order to access, on arrival in Italy, the health care of the Italian National Health Service you must have an STP code - Straniero temporaneamente presente (Temporarily present foreigner), which allows you to access urgent and essential care, such as access to emergency rooms, vaccinations, prescriptions for clinical exams, specialist visits and medicines.
The STP code is issued by public health facilities with one's personal identification information.
The application for residence permit for temporary protection guarantees health care on the national territory, with equal treatment as Italian citizens, through registration with the local health authority of residence. "Home" means the address listed on the application for residence permit for temporary protection.
The application for residence permit allows for the assignment of the general practitioner and/or paediatrician of your choice. Enrolment is usually done at an office or service desk, called "physician choice and revocation." At the same location, it will be possible to choose the family doctor and/or the paediatrician for minors. A paper document will be issued which will include:
Each family doctor or paediatrician chosen has an outpatient clinic and must guarantee, free of charge, general medicine visits, during established hours and days. You must see your doctor and paediatrician for any specialist and pharmaceutical prescriptions. Physician-prescribed medications are provided by pharmacies.
All women in Italy are entitled to maternity protection. If you are pregnant, you should see your family doctor for:
A written request from the family doctor is required for hospitalization, but in a health emergency situation, hospitalization is ordered by the doctor of the Emergency Room, which can be accessed for any emergency.
To protect everyone's health Italy offers free Covid-19 vaccination (5 years and older). With vaccination comes the issuance of a COVID-19 Green Certification (green pass).
You can request the vaccination at your nearest local health authority
Foreigners vaccinated in Ukraine already in possession of the COVID-19 Green Certification with QR code can also use it in Italy.
Foreigners vaccinated in Ukraine in the last six months with Pfizer, Moderna, Astrazeneca, Johnson&Johnson or Novavax vaccine (or equivalent COVISHIELD, R-Covi, FIOCRUZ) without Green Certification, can apply for recognition and get the green pass by presenting identification documents and vaccination documentation at the nearest local health authority.
Foreigners not vaccinated or vaccinated with other vaccines, notwithstanding the possibility to be vaccinated in Italy, must undergo a Covid test for which, in case of negativity, a green Covid-19 certification is issued, lasting 72 hours for molecular swabs and 48 hours for antigenic swabs.
In Italy, every time you take a Covid-19 test or you receive a Covid-19 vaccine shot or in the case of certified Covid-19 recovery, a Covid-19 green certification (green pass) is automatically issued.
Keep a safe distance of at least one meter, wash your hands often with soap and water or disinfect them with a hydroalcoholic solution; air the rooms where you reside several times during the day; avoid sharing of bottles and glasses.
FFP2 masks are mandatory on public transport.
Please note: Children under six years of age and persons with medical conditions or disabilities that are incompatible with the use of a mask should not wear a mask.
If you contract Covid-19, follow the Italian rules.
At least ten days of isolation from the first positive swab of which the last three were symptom-free (excluding loss of taste and smell).
Isolation days are reduced to seven for those who received the booster dose, have completed the vaccine cycle less than 120 days before, or have been cured of Covid-19 for less than 120 days.
You can only come out of isolation after a negative test. If you continue to test positive with molecular or antigenic tests and have not had any symptoms for at least 7 days (excluding loss of taste or smell) you can stop isolation at the end of 21 days
You can get vaccinations for diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, and - as assessed by health authorities - other vaccinations that will be offered free to you and your children.
You can, in addition, get screened for tuberculosis.
You can bring your pets into Italy in derogation of the European authorization procedures. In the case of border controls, the authorities may ask you to send the data by email to the Ministry of Health (UA-pets@sanita.it): species and number of animals (maximum 5), their identification information (if possible), the name of the owner and the destination address in Italy.
