Vaccine day, Speranza: 'Today is the day we all have been waiting for. There is still a long way to go, but we finally have a vaccine".

The first people to be vaccinated in Italy are the director of the virology laboratory at the Spallanzani National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Rome, Maria Rosaria Capobianchi, the nurse Claudia Alivernini and the social worker Omar Altobelli.

They were vaccinated on the morning of Vaccine-day, December 27, at the Spallanzani Institute, together with other health personnel from the Institute and at the same time as vaccination began throughout Italy and Europe.

" Today is the day we all have been waiting for. There is still a long way to go, but we finally have a vaccine " – announced Health Minister Roberto Speranza.

From  September 28, around 470,000 doses of the Pfizer-Biontech vaccine will be distributed every week in Italy. During the first phase, the vaccination will be restricted to health professionals, health and social care personnel working in hospitals and community services, as well as residents and staff in residential care facilities for the elderly. These groups will be contacted by direct call.
