Covid-19 weekly monitoring, report February 8 – 14, 2021

The incidence at national level is slightly increasing and the average Rt calculated on symptomatic cases was 0.99 (range 0.95- 1.07), up from the previous week and with an upper limit of one.

One region (Umbria) is considered at high risk level, according to the Ministerial Decree of  April 30, 2020. There are 12 (compared to 10 the previous week) Regions/PPAAs with a moderate risk classification (of which six with a high probability of progression to high risk in the coming weeks) and eight with low risk. Ten Regions/PPAs have a punctual Rt higher than 1, of which nine are also in the lower limit compatible with a type 2 scenario, an increase compared to the previous week.

For the third week, signs of a gradual increase in the epidemiological trend are confirmed, requiring national mitigation measures and timely mitigation/containment in the most widespread areas. A new rapid increase in the number of cases could quickly lead to an overload of health services, as it would be happening in a context where the basic incidence is still extremely high and there are still many people admitted for COVID-19 in the critical area.

Therefore, also in the light of the confirmation of the circulation of some viral variants with greater transmissibility, the need to maintain a strong reduction of physical interactions between people and of mobility is confirmed. Similarly, to what happens in other European countries, it is also recommended that measures be strengthened/increased throughout the country.
