Covid-19 weekly monitoring report: low level of criticality but cases up in some areas

The situation is positive on the whole but there are some small alarm signals, according to the sixth weekly monitoring report on phase two of the coronavirus emergency prepared by the Health ministry, the Higher Health Institute and the 'Cabina di Regia' control-room group.

Key points

The analysis regards the June 15-21, 2020 period, following the third phase of activity reopening that took place on June 3, 2020. Overall, the general picture of the impact and transmission of SARS-CoV-2 infection remains at a low level of criticality, with an incidence of 5.98 per 100,000 inhabitants (in decline).

There was a slight decrease in the number of new cases diagnosed at the national level with respect to the previous monitoring week.

Some Rt estimates for the week are up and that reflects a slight increase in the number of cases diagnosed in some regions where contagion hotspots broke out.

There continues to be no signs of care services being overwhelmed, although the number of reported cases remains high in some regions.

This calls for caution as it shows that, in some parts of the country, SARS-CoV-2 is still circulating at a significant level.

New cases of infection were diagnosed in almost all of the peninsular during the week of monitoring and this is, in part, thanks to intense screening and the investigation of cases with the identification of close contacts. Nevertheless, the presence of hotspots, including some with high numbers, shows that the virus continues to be capable of transmitting itself in the current conditions.

Conclusion

It is necessary to keep attention high and continue to strengthen testing-tracing-tracking activities, as well as keeping high the level of public awareness about the importance of continuing to rigorously respect the measures needed to reduce the risk of transmission, such as personal hygiene and physical distancing.
