Covid-19 weekly monitoring, report of December 28, 2020 - January 3, 2021

This week, December 28, 2020 - January 3, 2021, there is a general worsening of the epidemiological situation in the country. The 14-day incidence is increasing again after a few weeks of decline, the impact of the pandemic on health care services is also increasing, which in turn translates into a general increase in risk.

The national transmission index is increasing for the fourth consecutive week and, for the first time in six weeks, is above 1. Three regions have a punctual Rt significantly higher than 1 (Calabria, Emilia Romagna, and Lombardy), 6 others exceed it in their average value (Liguria, Molise, Sardinia, Sicily, Umbria, Valle d'Aosta), 4 others show a value equal to or close to 1 (Apulia) (Lazio, Piedmont, Veneto). One region (Veneto) has a particularly high incidence rate, compared with the national framework.

The epidemic is in a delicate phase, which seems to prelude a new rapid increase in the number of cases over the coming weeks, if more stringent mitigation measures are not defined and implemented. This would take place in a context of high incidence, where the growing level of pressure on health care facilities is still high in many Regions/PAs.
