Informal Meeting of the Ministries of Health

The Informal Meeting of the Ministries of Health that each Presidency of the Council of the European Union organises during its Term will be held in Milan on 22 and 23 September 2014.

The Meeting has been extended not only to the EU Ministries and the representatives of the European Parliament, Council and Commission but also to the Ministries of EFTA Countries (European Free Trade Association: Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland) and important international Health Associations (OECD, WHO).

The programme of the Milan event will have three sessions, preceded by a working lunch (breakfast), during which the Ministries will discuss the themes of pain therapy and palliative treatments.

The first of the three sessions will be dedicated to the theme of innovation for the benefit of patients, the second to the actions that the European Union is introducing due to the outbreak of the Ebola virus in a number of African Countries. On the second day of the event, delegations will be discussing cancer prevention, which is an issue of great importance for the Countries of the Union, considering that cancer is the second cause of death (29% for men and 23% for women) and more than 2.5 million people in the Union are diagnosed with cancer each year, with a strong impact on health systems and costs for society.

Two additional events have been organised during the informal Meeting: the Meeting of Attachés who deal with health issues, on behalf of the different Member States at Community Institutes, and the first Meeting of a Committee of Cancer Experts that the European Commission has created to provide technical-scientific support on this important issue.
